@Fash-E bad leadership and inability to deal with the social instability of the 70s in short and better leadership on the part of the USSR in short. this is a rough draft on a bit of differences, the U.S pretty much turns insane very early on and alienates itself from the rest of the world, the anti communist sentiment turns into an anti dissident sentiment. The USSR on the other hand just generally act less retarded. I forgot to add that they dont give away money to africa and as for afganistan, I'm debating on whether I should just make it where they just don't go in or have better leaders. It might be more interesting to have another story where the Soviets perform a model counter insurgency effort against the mujahideen. I also forgot to write down the idea swimming in my head of either a civil war or troubles like event within America that hampers its projection of power abroad. As you can see I still have some kinks to iron out, plot holes to fill, and more detail to add.
also yes, they do get bogged down in South America so much that they still are as the federal republic of America after the fall. They essentially become a rouge state with similar tactics to NK (or at least what their accused of) in how they involve themselves with crime worldwide including the drug trade
