@aral the problem for decent Americans is that they don't live in a proper democracy, and have the choice between voting for a flawed president and continuing business-as-usual or choosing (either directly or by voting 3rd party or not at all) a full-throated fascist who will double down in support of Netanyahu, and quite possibly abolish whatever is left of US democracy entirely.

@aral I don't blame those who support Biden in that environment, because the alternative, as bad as the status quo is today, will be orders of magnitude far worse.

@aral that's kind of reductive. Zionism is a 19th century romantic-nationalist movement that at one time had socialist adherents, not unlike many other European nationalist movements at the time. And yes, like those other 19th C movements, colonialism is part of the package.

Sure, it's sold to Bible-bashers in the US as a requirement to the Second Coming, but that's pretty recent marketing.

What I'd like to see is a TV show like Grand Designs, but posh people who decide to build their own web app.

It's interesting *why* the VCs are becoming ever more right wing and "anti-woke". Partially it's because they live in a bubble and breathe each others' farts, but it's also the realisation that the easy gains of the early 2000s internet are gone, the easy money is no longer there, and they need an authoritarian government to enforce the monopolisation, surveillance, tax avoidance and regulatory capture to keep them rich in perpetuity.

Fixing an issue with a React component whose job it is to handle the cookie consent banner. It's 3rd party so I'm looking at the implementation source code.

It's like dozens - I'm not joking - dozens of modules in package after package, including storybooks and test suites and whatnot.

I implemented a cookie consent banner in my side project in about 10 lines of Python code using HTMX, not including the HTML snippet.

This industry has become a joke.

@petergleick the tragedy of the past century is treating economics as a serious social science rather than a flaky and ill-disciplined branch of political philosophy.

@aral it's "price dumping" that in practice is rarely enforced although is often illegal.

For example in the UK maybe 20 years ago supermarkets would pretty much charge pennies for bread to put local bakeries out of business, then jack up the prices once the competition was wiped out.

@blacklight the problem is that other democracies are facing similar threats to the rule of law and voting rights.

Furthermore all of us face a fine-tuned, well-financed right wing propaganda machine working internationally through multiple channels and local political parties and lobbying groups.

So I don't think isolating and decoupling is the answer - rather we need to pool our resources.

@blacklight Go is a classic Conway's Law language: Google recruits tons of fresh grads from CompSci courses, they needed a simple language with as few footguns as possible so that junior devs with no experience could get up to speed writing decently performant "dumb" code as quickly as possible.
