I think that making an alternative browser engine nowadays is great. Nobody does that. Vivaldi that you've mentioned use chromium, btw.
IMHO, there is nothing wrong with asking for donation, even it's $70 millions. If you don't like them, don't pay. If you can make it better, do it, I'll be the first one to support you. But what you are doing now looks populist and shallow.
