As an example, there's only one app store made super visible on this laptop: the Google Play Store with Android apps. You open it and on the home page it advertises the Disney+ app. Cool! I'll install it!

It takes forever and runs like crap. Dragging it across the screen makes it lag behind the cursor, and loading a single other webpage makes the video stream constantly freeze up.

But if I go to the Disney+ website, it works great, with smooth video. But it recommends I open it in the app! 🤦

I'm testing using a Chromebook for some work-related things, and... wow. ChromeOS looks pretty in some screenshots and has some nice ideas, but all together it's quite a mess.

Play Store versus websites versus PWAs is muddy and the OS offers zero guidance. It's neat to be able to install Android apps, but the performance penalties are super painful.

Some ideas like the pinned files area on the "shelf" seem weird but actually make a lot of sense to keep you out of a file manager app.

It feels like Google wants ChromeOS to be a "real" OS with all the desktop features you'd expect, except it really just shines best as a glorified web browser. 😅

I mean, this boils down to basically every API is implemented as a status icon, but hey, that’s kind of the point!

I lightweight want to make a new desktop environment experiment which uses all the fancy new portal and cross-desktop APIs, but implements them in the most Windows 95 way possible. To prove it can be done and actually serve that experience if that is what people want.

Years ago elementary was approached by Canonical to become an official Ubuntu flavor. “All” we had to do was offer Snap out of the box. We debated it—being able to offload some additional infrastructure concerns was attractive—but we realized it helped Canonical more than it helped us, and we had chosen Flatpak for all of its benefits as covered here:

I 3D printed a case for my Playdate, and it came out way better than expected! I suspect the hinge won’t last long, but the embedded magnets for attaching and closing are *so nice.*

I love gyroid infill and tree supports for #3DPrinting. There’s something super cool about how organic/nature-inspired it looks, and it makes me wonder what other kinds of innovations there will be on the purely software side of 3D printing?

It’s pretty dope that I can install a free, open source OS like Endless OS, install a couple of apps from the built-in app store, and have an industry-standard 3D printing setup.

Inkscape, Blender, FreeCAD, Cura, PrusaSlicer, and more are just right there, ready to go.

Just add a 3D printer. :)

@khm I have a problem with unilaterally calling open source, transparent metrics “spyware,” regardless of who maintains the project. That isn’t helpful when there are actually-invasive closed telemetry permeating everything we do, and fighting *that* is actually worthwhile. But mixing them up just means open source software will forever be at a massive disadvantage when instead we could lead the way with how to do metrics correctly, while actually preserving privacy and transparency.

@khm honestly, the proposal sounds… fine for the most part? I love the idea of fully transparent telemetry, where the data is directly published in the open to validate what is collected and hold the project accountable; in fact, this is exactly what Plausible Analytics enables which I think is a great model.

Opt in versus out is a good question and would require some thought. I do feel like an active choice (rather than a passive default) would be the best route, though.

3️⃣ Streaming on Endless OS:

I realized I have never done a stream of Endless OS! I would like to get my streaming setup set up again, show off Endless OS 5 a bit on stream, and importantly, document the process as a blog post to share with others.

2️⃣ GNOME Web web app UI:

It’s been a pain point for me (and others, based on conversations at Ubuntu Summit and beyond!) that GNOME Web’s web app UI is not any more streamlined than regular GNOME Web. I’d like to propose designs and possibly proofs of concept to improve the experience.

1️⃣ Password hint in GNOME:

We have historically shipped a password hint feature in Endless OS, much like you might see in Windows or macOS. This is supported under the hood, but not by GDM, GNOME Initial Setup, or GNOME Settings. We’d like to upstream our work here.
