good reasons to block an instance:
- the entire instance exists solely to post spam
- the entire instance exists solely to post bigotry
- the admins don't do their job, and spammers/bigots are taking advantage of them
- the server has someone posting stuff that's illegal where you are
- someone on the instance is harassing someone on your instance, and the admins of the instance won't do anything to help
bad reasons to block an instance:
- a single screenshot out of context of someone saying something that looks kinda bad a couple years ago
- someone else told you to do it or else they'll block you
- you just think the admin is annoying -

i personally think blindly copying and sharing blocklists is still cringe because it's trivially easy for that sort of mindset to be hijacked for the harassment of vulnerable people. of course, that's not to say that it's a bad idea to look at what other servers people block and to consider blocking them if you agree with the reasoning; just only do it if they're actually providing good evidence for why you should block that person -
