Ahh, gotcha.

If you want the buttons from the dark version but with a lighter colour scheme, do this:

1. Click Preferences (at bottom right of screen)
2. Click Flavours (at left of screen)
3. Click GLITCH EDITION (at left of screen)
4. Near bottom of screen from the menu labelled "skin" choose the option "Mastodon Light"
5. Click the "Use this" button below that

This will give you the extra buttons from the "glitch" version of Mastodon, but with the light colour scheme.

I think that was my fault, I told you to click on the check mark which marked them as read. Sorry about that 😳

But it should be back to normal from now on as you're back with the extra button mode.

And you should be able to see the notifications even if they're marked as read?

Yes, I can help!

1. Go to Preferences (on the bottom right)
2. Click Notifications (on the left of the screen)
3. Uncheck all of the boxes
4. Click "Save Changes" button in top right

I think some of the boxes might checked by default, which is why you have to do that to switch them off.

It won't bring back the posts though, sorry.

I'm afraid I don't have any control over where the publish button is, I'm just a volunteer who helps people use this place!

But, there are other ways of using Mastodon such as apps? They have things laid out a bit differently, perhaps one of them might suit you?

You can search on Google Play for "Tusky", which is a good app. Or you can use the official app, which is just called "Mastodon".

If you don't like them you can just go back to the website, or use both!

Can you see a Preferences link at the bottom of the screen on the right? It has a cog next to it ⚙️

About the lightness, there is an option for a light mode as well.

If you can see Preferences:

Your server is running Glitch Mastodon, which is an unofficial variant of Mastodon that has more features and options, but its default theme can be a bit odd if you're used to Mastodon's theme.

You can change the theme for your account by doing this:

1. Click on Preferences (at right of screen)
2. Click on Flavours (at left of the screen)
3. Click on Vanilla Mastodon
4. Select "default" skin
5. Click "Use This" at bottom of the screen.

This should give you standard Mastodon's theme.

Are you using Mastodon through the website?

Your server uses a slightly different version of Mastodon which looks a bit different to normal.

If you want it to look like normal Mastodon, do the things in the numbered steps above and it will look like normal Mastodon. The steps will make sense once you do them, you'll see the options you need appear on the screen.

If you're using the multicoloumn version of Mastodon, you can switch to the easier single column mode by doing this:

1. Click on the preferences icon ⚙️
2. Un-tick the box marked "enable advanced web interface"
3. Click the "save changes" button at the top

Even if you have just one account, there will be two separate addresses for the account and the blog as a whole.

It might be that one account works better than the other, so it's worth trying both?
