And then the PSU had bad contacts on the ATX connector because to connect to the amp, I had crammed 0.75mm copper wires in there, which widened the contacts, so I had to tighten them up again with a small screwdriver.

The complete lack of free space to work in without constantly having to shift shit around, easily reachable components and dedicated space for tools makes working here incredibly fucking frustrating.

The project never got quite out of bare-bones prototyping due to resource issues (this was before KMS with hardware acceleration became the norm) – but with KMS and libdrm the problems I ran into back then got solved…

One additional thing I noticed tho is that Altman, especially given how much of a given he seems to think AGI is, does not say a single word about AGI rights, but talks about them as "products" and about "pulling them from production".

From what I've seen of the "AI" community, I fully expect that *if* AGI is created, it won't be planned.

An engineer will just connect one more subsystem and things will emerge from that.

Also if consciousness (however weakly defined) emerges, it probably won't be spotted for quite a while, and with these systems being products there's a financial incentive to explain anything resembling consciousness away, not to mention how impossibly hard it would be to *prove* consciousness…

@ovid I've had ChatGPT write snippets, but they aren't really reliable.

For example it absolutely got the API of pythons ast module wrong (which to be fair, is likely a result of the documentation). It did however point me in the right direction to solve the problem I was working on.

But, crucially, I haven't seen it do any actual software *engineering*.

@alcinnz My inspiration was CL-WHO, the library I used way back when I was doing web stuff with Lisp.

The "templates" are essentially just nested constructor calls with some AST magic for more comfortable conditionals and loops.

@alcinnz The underlying engineering philosophy might be similar, but as with the previous framework, my goal is to have a tightly integrated solution for jsless DIY data journalism. :3

I haven't actually installed and played around with it yet, but from the docs it seems like it's essentially a couple thousand new functions for postgres.

Seems to include built-in support for map projections, all sorts of neat topological queries and even geometry simplification – all things where I'll be very glad if I'm able to outsource them to the DBMS. :P

@alcinnz Also decided to go exclusively for postgres this time around because I want to use postgis for more powerful and performant map features and I really hope that won't bite me in the ass.^^

@alcinnz The SQL generator is independent from actual database interaction – that's a layer on top of it that I'm currently hacking on, with sessions being the first thing to use it. :)

@alcinnz I started redoing my webframework from scratch about half a year ago.

This time without depending on flask and peewee.

I already got:
* URL routing
* something akin to flasks blueprints
* a "templating" engine using a tree of native python objects mapping 1:1 onto the resulting DOM
* an unfinished SQL generator with a syntax similar to peewee

I finally managed to work on the new webframework again and I am happy to report that the basics of server-side sessions now work.

Tomorrow I might or might not optimize the thing a bit and start introducing random UUIDs as primary keys as well as symmetric encryption with a key stored on visitors browsers.

The point I'm trying to make here is… there is no "right" solution.

The lower-style class of communication can be a hurtful experience for people who aren't in the in-group, but seeing attempts to ban coarse language as an attack on lower-class identity is also a valid perspective.

You will always have to weigh peoples needs, privileges and deprivations against each other and anyone saying that's simple is either lying or completely clueless about how much damage they're doing.

A common point of contention between the two is language: I've seen entirely too many conflicts over homophobic or other slurs involving these two groups that were 100% miscommunication.

The more well-educated people tend to prioritize "non-violent speech" while coarse language is both a class identifier and a sign of trust for lower-class people.

@alcinnz A thing to keep in mind for conflict resolution is also that privileges and prejudices are often clustered.

One common example I've seen is that affluent, well-educated people tend to be LGBT-friendly but foster classist views while lower-class people tend to be less classist but more homophobic.
