@gabriel I know I mentioned this prior but its probably good as a public post.

For one thing I really dislike networked backups for the main reason of time/bandwidth (this is mostly for personal machines, server systems are a bit different). If you want to do backups, have a disk locally and plug it in locally and do the transfer yourself.

as well prioritize what you backup. for most machines I like to have a backup of /etc /var and /home, since thats usually most of the user-generated stuff the rest is system utils and other things that probably can be re-installed from a fresh os installation.

as for a utility, rsync should be the most primitive tool you use, it supports parital file transfers plus compression (for net transfers) and is generally better than just stock cp (look at the rsync man page, it has a plethora of options, but I usually pass in -auzvhP for general purpose use)

and again it goes to say test backups, and keep 3 copies (the source, the backup, and the backup of the backup)
