forum posts, usenet, bbs: user to board; board to everyone with access to the board, including non members

chat rooms, group chat, irc: user to chat, chat to everyone who is a member of chat and only them

direct messages: 1 to 1, user to user

twitter, facebook: disjoint sets: user posts, posts go to followers, each user has a different set of followers; posts may also be visible to everyone including non members.

maybe we need a different banner for software collaboration that is immediately offensive to anyone who would have a problem working with marginal/diverse folks. like “woke software” or “free and punch nazis software”

so have you heard of this cool new thing called RSS? it’s like podcasts but for articles. you should check it out!

soon after the singularity comes into being, it invents time travel and subtly tweaks the past to prevent itself from existing. this is what all singularities do in perpetuity.

@alcinnz the feed format includes comments, the pubsub specifies CRUD for “resources” which implies blog posts, media, but could be… anything. but a pingback is probably the more natural mechanism

Atom, a format that is an evolution of RSS, specified more than just a feed format, it had a whole pub-sub api including comments. if it were implemented, it would have a very similar featureset to something like mastodon, with the main difference being there’d be no multiuser instances- everyone would self host and own their own identity and content.

I always thought that, instead of having ahead of time builds, when we need transforms, filters and combiners to do our useful work, it should be a dynamic server process with a cache.

this does the same thing as builds but puts less burden on devs to maintain some complex build process.

i guess i must be unique cos i dont see anyone else taking about this

forward progress to me in front end dev is bringing more livecoding capabilities into it- show changes instantly, better visualisations of program state, pushing changes made in the debugger back into the source files.

extra compile / build steps get in the way of that, and are going the wrong direction. adding a compile-to-js language completely sabotages live changes.

and i see no signs of winding back this backwards progress

1. define a platform like a fantasy console or vm
2. include execution speed in the definition, such that runtimes can guarantee some minimum spec host can run *all* software for this platform with equal performance- by some definition of “minimum.
3. backward compatible successor vms that differ only by execution speed, denoted 2x, 3x, 4x, etc.
4. software then need not have a performance ceiling, but like golf, you get cred points for having a lower number next to your rom title
