Gendered Species: A Natural History of Patriarchy offers a reframing of our species’ current debate about gender norms. It shows why behavioural norms are different for women than for men in all societies, why these rules vary across cultures, and why they change through time. Although random cultural differences, institutions, & power structures play a role, these all have their roots in ecological factors and evolved social behaviour. The book provides a science-based, non-political, and calm assessment of the evolution and variation of gender norms.It explores how humans became the only gendered species, why our ancestors were mostly gender equal, and how that gave rise to patriarchal systems all around the world within merely a few thousand years.

Dr. Tamás Dávid-Barrett is an evolutionary behavioural scientist at the University of Oxford. His science is multi-disciplinary, occupying the overlap between anthropology, biology, economics, sociology, psychology, and network science.

A small pathetic incident this past week -- and 'pathetic' is the right word for the #genocide #complicity permeating our lives. This was nothing like the #police raid on Electronic Intifada (#Palestine's #weapon of #Mass #Instruction) and oh orders of magnitude less and less than what's being done to people in Palestine and #Lebanon now...

I went with a friend over from the US to visit the National Gallery. When we went through bag check, quite extraordinarily the bag security personnel (doubtless under orders) told me I could not carry a bag with a 'Free Palestine' badge. Unbelieving I stood there and started to raise my voice on such willingness by a national institution to side with genocide! I continued to yell, bewildered. So were the bag check guys, wondering what to do with me. They were indicating 'just cover it up' which was appalling enough. Because of my friend, I slipped in.

But the whole of my bag was crying

The #MiddleStoneAge in #Namibia's desert. The Namib Sand Sea, a hyperarid landscape of towering dunes, once held a small freshwater lake fed by an ancient river and surrounded by a rich record of stone tools from the #African MSA.

'Our results show that the lake was present at Narabeb at some point between 231,000 ± 20,000 and 223,000 ± 19,000 years ago and again about 135,000 ± 11,000 years ago.'

More fantastic news: archaeological research led by #GunaiKurnai Aboriginal Elders has demonstrated continuity of #ritual practice reaching back 500 generations to the last Ice Age.

'GunaiKurnai Country, caves were not used as residential places during the early colonial period (mid-nineteenth century CE), but as secluded retreats for the performance of rituals by Aboriginal medicine men and and women known as ‘mulla-mullung’, as documented by ethnographers. Here we report the discovery of buried 11,000- and 12,000-year-old miniature fireplaces with protruding trimmed wooden artefacts made of Casuarina wood smeared with animal or human fat, matching the configuration and contents of GunaiKurnai ritual installations described in nineteenth-century ethnography.'
