Day 2 Panel 10 -
Nakeema Stefflbauer
Artificial Intelligence and Automation worsen the already existing dynamics of digital exclusion regarding:
- social benefits
- travel
- work
- school
- mental health

She concludes on neo-colonialism through digital tech that exploit #TechHypes reinforcing dependencies and existing unequal power structures
Day 2 Panel 10 -
This panel brought up very interesting topics, but tbh I felt the way 'the digital' is addressed is as inevitable and necessary, and somehow universal. It also keeps on a very precise idea on what 'the digital' is doesn't consider non-Western ontologies. That will need a deeper discussion and I need to reflect more on it. I leave it here for today.
For more critical discussion on #tech I suggest @parismarx #podcast

while for AI ethical discussion I highly advise to engage with @DAIR work.
Last but not least, on algorithm and design, look at the amazing work of the Algorimic Justice League https://www.ajl.org/
and the Design Justice Framework
https://designjustice.org/
I have no ready references for different ontologies in tech, but the podcast mentioned before have some interesting interviews with non-western perspectives.
See you in the afternoon.
Just a final note on the panel, answering to the question on 'What needs to shrink in the digital realm from a degrowth perspective', Nakeema Stefflbauer responded clearly: 'Large Language Model'
Which I totally agree, but I would say Tech Giants should be in the top of the Shrinking List. Also, I am a very big fan of @aral concept of 'Small Web' which I am very said nobody brings in the picture (despite he presented it many times in EU homes)
https://ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-small-web/
At some point I should write something about indigenous fetishism and why every time I hear the word 'sacred', 'healing', 'spiritual', and 'wisdom' from white people going on 'self-discovery trips' to remote land my skin crawls.
The commodification of #indigenous cultures is so normalised that even people that talk a lot about 'pluriverse' and 'decolonisation' fail completely to recognise how their 'ayahuasca trip' is and expression of whiteness, not a #cultural exchange
Is it just me or the majority of posts that I am seeing now containing images don't have any #AltText ?
One thing that I really liked here when I joined some months ago was exactly how people cared about #accessibility issues.
I know cultures suffer loss when communities grow, but we should always encourage good practices to be maintained.
@aral a little pride from my Italian roots I guess ;)
Happy holiday!
@aral I wouldnโt be necessarily so harsh on you. Awareness grows with time and through a process of acquiring knowledge for parsing certain information in the correct form. Though you were misinformed and wrong, you moved on to a place now that allows you to see it, which is an achievement onto itself, isnโt it?
Italian Christmas dinner is loadingโฆ

@aral I think I can relate to your feeling (same reactions every time I re-read my old essays or blogs). Weโve all been naive at some point, and maybe depending on subjects and points of view we still are. I find valuable to admit it and recognise โI was wrongโ because it means youโve grown and deepen your knowledge ;)
