The good: -The visuals were 10/10. It's a beautiful 3d movie. -They didn't race swap characters to be black. -Constant nods to a variety of mario games. -Seath Rogan as DK was actually fine. -Jack Black as Bowser was actually fine.
The bad: -New York is where Mario lives. -guardians of the galaxy level of pop music inserted all over the place was shit. -Cranky Kong is an old Jewish man instead of an old Japanese man??? -Mario's family is Jewish??? -Peach is a "Girl Boss" -Missed opportunity for Mario to have a training arc with Toad or a training arc with the wise old Cranky Kong and his son DK. INSTEAD we get Peach showing us how much she doesn't need Mario and then talking down to him afterwards. -Who's that? *points to Mario* "He's unimportant" ~Peach -oh and in the flashback their bully was a blonde white kid. So everyone in their town is a brown poc but the bully is a white kid... ok sure. -Materialistic themes of nothing matters with the Blue Star was really off-putting. I know it was a joke but they kept leaning into it. -Not all humans are from earth?? No answer, no point, just subversive. Praise science moment.
I didn't need Peach to be a victim but I didn't want Peach to have a harsh voice and be perfect all the time. She really could have done everything without Mario. Overall it was quality goy-slop entertainment. I ate candy and tried to enjoy myself. Loads better than other movies out there but it still has it's faults.
