@nosat @dassauerkraut @furgar @mrman like seriously, on a large heavy sphere (like Earth) gravity acts towards the center. That image presupposes a flat earth so it looks ridiculous, because you've been conned. So water keeps a level, but that level is a sphere because the gravitational potential is the same.

@nosat @furgar if only there was a force pulling everything towards the center of the Earth (and any other large mass). In that situation, you'd expect the atmosphere to be in a gradient as the molecules would be pushing away from each other but also pulled to earth. Almost like a balance... Oh wait. And before you do the moon lander not being thick enough to hold a pressurized compartment, a soda can can hold 2 atmospheres and Apollo was only like 2/3 of an atmosphere

@furgar @nosat @mrman there are equations. A whole subset of engineering covers it called optical engineering. The ABL program had to compensate for it to keep the laser focused at a distance. What's the difference between those two pictures then? Why are the cranes bendy and jagged in one, but not the other? What physical phenomena covers it?
