the announcement here was the first i ever heard about the andy and leyley creator not actually being doxxed
-
does anyone remember sankaku complex? well obviously it still exists and was always basically a trashy tabloid but back in 2013 or so it was very interesting to young me because not only would they report on stuff, they'd also translate japanese comments from 2ch. i don't think anything like that really exists anymore

itazuraneko is dead after 5 years thankfully the creator had the sense to put backups on github and mega, and there is already a re-hosted version. working "this site will probably die someday" into your plans is cool

2000s was probably the peak for western otaku culture because it was big enough to have an actual decently-sized community behind it but not so big that people who aren't already predisposed to liking it would find it and try to join and change it to their liking. it's weird when i see people clamoring for those times who still support everything that ruined that in the first place

-
judging from this image it looks like loli fans have a big advantage in learning japanese
-
@MordredSimp yeah, i just had no clue about it happening to anything but anime because frankly i don't really follow western media
-
one thing i've realized recently is that america really likes to localize/americanize any non-american media, not just japanese. for example there was a "the magic roundabout" movie, which is french, and was then dubbed into english for the uk, and then renamed and redubbed into "doogal" for the us release with american voice actors, and a new script that adds tons of american pop culture references. i found that out and thought "wow that sure sounds familiar"

whoever designed hatoba tsugu is a genius
-
how do we feel about "kuroneko" girls? obviously kuroneko from oreimo but also bernkastel from umineko and kagami kuro from kodomo no jikan and yukimi from idolmaster
