@Moon Because they'd just killed the king and were trying to establish a new regime based on a totally different political formula they were making up as they went along and didn't have a lot of authority, and the power vacuum was seized by Robespierre and his little cunt friend Saint-Just who both got drunk with power and were obsessed with "saving the Revolution". it created a very insecure bureaucratic apparatus ran by little reddit dweebs who were trying to eliminate all threats to the new government, but they ended up killing anyone even slightly associated with the old regime and then anyone who even looked at them funny. it's basically what happens when insecure feminine beta males are put in charge and given no checks on their actions. the most charitable interpretation is that they did indeed have a lot of enemies both foreign and internally, and they were at war with multiple countries, and were dealing with revolts all over the country, so probably many of the people purged were justified to begin with, but in later stages the committee was used to settle Robespierre's personal grievances and any slights or insults against him. -
