>Hébert fainted several times on the way to the guillotine and screamed hysterically when he was placed under the blade. Hébert's executioners amused the crowd by adjusting the guillotine so that its blade stopped inches above his neck,[22] and it was only after the fourth time the lever (déclic) was pulled that he was actually beheaded.

I am le morally perfect incorruptible man of virtue
>builds a legal apparatus capable of show trialing 50 people at once
>sends them in batches of 150 at a time to the guillotine every day for months
>requires multiple mass graves to be freshly dug to contain all the gore
>his best friend writes an article saying "hey bro, maybe lay off the killing?" gets executed for treason
-
@augustus it was all necessary, for the greater good.

@augustus justice should be crowd-pleasing

@augustus I wonder if any of the programs have survived.

@Moon >For a time, executions by guillotine were a popular form of entertainment that attracted great crowds of spectators, with vendors selling programs listing the names of the condemned.

@augustus he even looks like a shitweasel

@augustus what were the people even being killed for, I don't know much about this.
-
@Moon Because they'd just killed the king and were trying to establish a new regime based on a totally different political formula they were making up as they went along and didn't have a lot of authority, and the power vacuum was seized by Robespierre and his little cunt friend Saint-Just who both got drunk with power and were obsessed with "saving the Revolution". it created a very insecure bureaucratic apparatus ran by little reddit dweebs who were trying to eliminate all threats to the new government, but they ended up killing anyone even slightly associated with the old regime and then anyone who even looked at them funny. it's basically what happens when insecure feminine beta males are put in charge and given no checks on their actions. the most charitable interpretation is that they did indeed have a lot of enemies both foreign and internally, and they were at war with multiple countries, and were dealing with revolts all over the country, so probably many of the people purged were justified to begin with, but in later stages the committee was used to settle Robespierre's personal grievances and any slights or insults against him.
