We could go for boxy designs, but anything we ever get is just going to be flat in some way or another. The most I've seen was a modern skeumorphic design but honestly it looks too overdone to really be set in stone (you can see some aspects of it in Windows 11 and maybe new macOS design), but it still is always going to be some weird variant of flat design. Nobody seems to care about aesthetic except for nostalgia, people see it and think "this is old" just by looking and assume its outdated if its not flat so it's a hard-locked marketing strategy too.
I do like that we've moved away from pure-flat design and at least brought some older aesthetics and relied on Blur and stuff a lot so it doesn't just look like pure solid colors like windows 8 did. macOS still looks bad and Windows 11 actually stepped up their game a bit -
