The Guardian report linked to in the article says "Meta has spent ... more than $100bn on (Metaverse) research and development and product development"

By comparison, the same article quotes Sony as $5 billion a year and Apple $21 billion a year as their entire R&D spend across all their departments.

No wonder the share price collapsed, Meta spent more on R&D for the Metaverse than Sony spends on its entire product range in 20 years.

Is there an assumption that everyone is on Google?

There used to be an assumption that everyone was on Facebook, but thankfully that seems to be eroding. Let's hope Google goes the same way.

Seeing certain business people who have just joined the Fedi posting that Venure Capital and algorithms etc are "inevitable" on the Fediverse, and that we should embrace them, because they are somehow innately better than volunteers or small non-profits etc.

If for-profits are innately better, why are they here? Why did they come to a volunteer-built network?

Truth is this: VC firms are shallow vampires trying to exploit trends by making everything for-profit.

Seems to be some kind of nasty block-evading system operating at:

activitypub-proxy.cf

To quote the site itself:

"A simple proxy for ActivityPub that lets you circumvent blocks by masquerading as another domain name..."

"...say you want to follow (someone) but the woke administrator has blocked you..."

Whoever is behind this is deliberately avoiding blocks and helping others to do so too.

They are mistaken, whoever they are. It is okay for authors to talk about their books!
