It is possible to do home automation in a way that doesm't ever touch the Internet, so it avoids 3/4 of the problems with IoT. And some people will want that.

And I think this affects other modern language features as well. Not sure which and whether they reduce to generics, but notice how most of the new compiled-to-native programming languages - like Rust, Zig, Go, Hare, etc - distribute libraries in source form, and compile them all together.

What if LLVM but a function can return a new function (as in, generated code) and both the generating function and the code it returns gets optimized and compiled to machine code statically?

Of the three options, I think (c) is the most attractive - it would make us no longer stuck with C-like APIs for anything dynamically linked.

But I'm not even sure if it's possible without using some intermediate language (like LLVM or some bytecode) as the object format, and delaying the generation of actual machine code until link/load time.

But maybe using LLVM-like IR for distributable objects wouldn't be a bad idea? How bad would it be to codegen at load-time?

Consider how generics can be implemented in a compiled language:

a) specialize them at compile time - this means any library with generics in its API has to be distributed as source, and compiled *with or after* the code that uses it

b) erase them at compile time - they're just static checks, the type parameters can't affect behaviour, and everything becomes void* - no u64, vectors, or pass-by-value structs

c) specialize them at link time - now you need a new ABI and object format...

@alcinnz yeah and I'm not saying people should stop making these movies.

I'm also not saying people should make more realistic adventure movies (I think I'd enjoy watching one, but one viewer won't pay the costs of making an entire movie).

But this chain-of-clues pattern did break immersion for me

Finding-lost-city/treasure type of adventure movies tend to have chains of clues, each pointing to the next one.

But I think it'd be more realistic if they had clue trees - shorter chains with multiple hypotheses, branching off into "dead ends" that, while not leading to the goal, give you a better look at the big picture, making it easier to interpret the clues you already had or walked past.

if the ToS contains something like

"by uploading you give us non-exclusive non-revocable copyright license to redistribute those files for the purpose of hosting a package repository, and promise under penalty or sth that you have the necessary rights to grant such license"

then they should be in the clear wrt. copyright I think...

Well until someone uploads something without having such license.

As for GDPR... maybe they have in ToS sth like "you shall not upload any personal data", but then again, what do they do if someone does it anyway?
