You should not criticise Debian for a design decision they did not make or even want to make. Debian is not for people who do not care about the inner workings of the operating sytem, but for people who do.
I suppose the "you should try Debian with XFCE" suggestions were given to you because people know that you are a technical person who can figure these things out. But of course you don't have to if you don't like and the point you made is absolutely valid. Just directed to the wrong people unfortunately.
Having said all that, I do beliefe that every programmer should always mind the target audience of a program and a Login Manager should be simple enough to be used by anyone. I'd expect Linux Distributions that have "non-technical" users in mind to offer a better experience regardless if they are based on Debian or not.
