A landmark study has uncovered corruption “red flags” in government Covid contracts worth more than £15bn – representing nearly one in every three pounds awarded by the Conservative administration during the pandemic.
@SDWolf@tilton@wdormann@rakslice Counterpoint: no it's not. Putting a menu bar in every single window instead of a context-sensitive single menu bar at the top of the screen wastes screen real estate: MS only did it because Apple patented the latter. (The single resize point? Again, that was a MacOS thing MS "borrowed".)
I think it'd be TRULY EXCELLENT to convince the Heritage Foundation to add a committment to force-migrate the US government to TempleOS as the One True Software Stack for Everything because it's the only OS to Respect Jesus (or something). Get it into Plan 2025 stat! That way none of the rest of their bullshit schemes will be possible any more because all the software they use will halt and catch fire in the absence of memory protection and pre-emptive multitasking.
The cloud industry has a combined market cap of around $250Bn, and the stakeholders (MSFT, AMZN, AAPL, etc) have combined market caps on the order of 10% of planetary GDP, and they're locked in a multiway prisoner's dilemma game with escalating stakes.
When this bubble bursts it's potentially going to cause a global recession. Never mind all the folks whose wages have been depressed or whose jobs have gone away because management bought into the AI grifters' spiel. https://wandering.shop/@cstross/112869289783952402
Not enough people realize that the "Turing Test" as originally presented was "can a gay English man in 1945 tell the difference between a chatbot and a femme-coded woman" over a teletype connection.
(Turing was very gay and had a sex-segregated education and then work life: he basically didn't know women and his alienation is palpable. But today's techbros don't have any such excuse, and the emphasis on femme-coded AI is ... telling.) https://mastodon.xyz/@pmorinerie/112506480363973206
@LALegault It's bad enough that some of the more honest politicians have noticed, and are discussing what to do: unfortunately this is the Welsh Assembly, not Parliament in Westminster, but it's a start.
