@foone all of this sounds to me like a really big monitor arm attached to ceiling or bedpost territory plus keyboard and probably trackpad
like if you could get (or make or get made) one of those flex-arm lights that adam savage makes only stick a monitor on the end of it. so you could put the monitor just fucken anywhere and run the cables inside the flexi-tube arm.
@foone ceramics almost always hold up, I wouldn’t bother.
That brown goop looks like a particular glue which is known to become corrosive and conducive over time. But if it’s that, why also hot glue? I has a confusion.
@foone I've got one of those! I like it! I was thinking of getting a second one for six pedals and that'd get you six - 3 left foot 3 right foot, is that less confusing?
@foone Oh! OR: maybe white is used in the debug builds for debug output at shutdown. _Not_ taking it out is one less code change between test and ship.
@cstross An E.T.-branded tie-in mountain bike from Trek. Surprisingly didn't do very well, given how big a hit the film was, and now it's a collector's item.
Not everyone has - or should be required to have - the kind of armour-clad skin some of us have developed. Why is adding the ability to curate your notifications a _bad_ thing for _low_ follower count users? Do those users never get negged? Do they never have a toot go a bit popular? Do they never get sealioned? Of course they do.
Why is having control over _what you get notified about_ ... somehow elitist?
I was in a discussion today with @TechConnectify and @feditips about reply toxicity here, and I've tried to make all of that into a coherent post.
I want to go to #MastoDev with a version of this, but need to let it sit overnight and probably rewrite it. But I also think it's something anyone interested in non-corporate-controlled social media needs to think about, because a fair number of people go "influencers, fuck 'em" and that's... not how I think this needs to be understood. If you don't care about them, fine, but care about their followers who _will_ follow them away.
Because like it or not, if you want to go against corporate-owned social media, you need these people too.
Canada's Tories (#CPC) are going culture warrior, adopting bathroom bans, trans health care bans, and vaccine denialism;
Viv3k Ramasw4my, ignoring the plain text and intent of the 14th Amendment, declares he'd expel millions of US children;
M4tt W4lsh sics his misogynist army on a woman for posting about her Saturday; she gets death threats;
#Project2025 includes a plan to rapidly criminalise all #LGBTQ people; I walk you through the steps;
The #GOP know their abortion laws are hated but they won't change, so they want to rebrand. Watch for new terminology and know what it means! (They're testing "pro-baby")
@GWillow Putting aside being called a “little Elon…”
(Hi, site admin. NOT at dice.camp)
One look at (not just) Florida shows the problems of social media as a public utility. Look what they’ve done in schools. Me and mine would _already_ be banned.
Really. I was _illegal_ in 19 states - I kept a no-go list until 2003 - and they want to make us all illegal again. And as they criminalise, they silence.
@GWillow There’s a reasonably well known problem called the Nazi Bar problem. It’s closely related to the paradox of tolerance problem in that if you let a any nazis into your bar, your bar becomes a nazi bar because they push everyone else out.
Mastodon is the _first and only_ social network so far to successfully use the nazi bar phenomenon _against nazis_. Defederation - site blocking - is what makes that work. Without it, the problem reverts to mass systematic harassment.
And it’s not fair and it’s not right and I’m still not wrong.
Federated social media has real issues. Not denying that at all. But _unlike_ the situation where your monolithic site gets taken over by fash - be it Musk Twitter or DeSantis Hypothetical Public Social - you at least _can_ hop over to another site and reconnect and rebuild.
You’re not just… done.
But that’s not the only argument against monolithic social networking.
@GWillow But with defederation, if you let your bar become a nazi bar, we stop talking.
Effectively, in federation - nazi bars kettle _themselves_.
I’m a site admin. The relative-to-twitter lack of harassment raids isn’t because they aren’t trying. It’s because Federation - which includes _de_-federation - makes it so much harder.
And yet, even they aren’t banned from social media. Nazi Mastodon is real. Just… contained.
That’s a real big baby to throw out with the bathwater.
