Aerial image of a forming thermokarst lake in western #Alaska. Ice wedges in the ground are melting, the ground is sinking/subsiding and water is ponding in the newly formed depressions. This process will likely continue and accelerate and eventually form a #lake The image is around 370m wide and taken from about 1000m altitude in one of our flight campaigns in 2021. 164.535°W; 66.532 °N #aerial#aviation#eochat#landscape#remotesensing#earthart#science#permafrost#arctic#geography
Our colleague Inna Capdeboscq is participating in an effort by a group of mathematicians to produce a new proof -- the Generation-2 proof – of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.
Born in 1914, Hedy Lamarr was a famous American actress who pioneered the technology that would lead to WiFi, GPS, cell phones & Bluetooth communication.
Lamarr was brilliant. Among many fascinating inventions, she developed a new communication system with composer George Antheil that used “frequency hopping” among radio waves.
Once called the “most beautiful woman in the world," Lamarr is now remembered as "the mother of Wi-Fi."
#HarvardBookStore in #CambridgeMA is my favourite bookstore, and their events are part of why. I had a great time yesterday evening at the reading+discussion of *The Terraformers* with @annaleen! For example, I learned that a planet can have a molten core and volcanoes, but no plate tectonics, leading to the volcanoes making persistent lava tubes and staying in the same place over long timescales. I love #scifi with real #science @bookstodon#books
I've known for a while that posting an #introduction is the done thing.. it's just that I'm too much of an #introvert for that ever to seem like a good idea. Nevertheless I'll try to be a good citizen: Hi, I'm charis. I work in #nhs#research governance in the north west uk. I like #maths, #science, #CriticalThinking, #nature, #books, quirky humor and a nice cup of #tea. Oh, and there will be pictures of cats - it appears inevitable.
Physicist John Tyndall is often credited with discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.
But female scientist Eunice Foote published a paper - 3 years earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earth’s atmosphere warm its #climate.
Rather than teach #science by compartmentalizing biology, chemistry, physics, etc., we should focus on systems thinking.
The world is interconnected - oceans, food, #climate, energy, health, security, biodiversity & on.
When more of us, all around the world, consider how the pieces fit together & influence each other, we’ll be better equipped to meet global challenges.
Over the past few weeks, I have had the privilege of working with some brilliant people on establishing a challenge to virology in order to finally put their (pseudo)scientific methods to the test. Stemming from the mind of Dr. #TomCowan and meticulously crafted by Dr. #MarkBailey and Dr. #KevinCorbett, the No “Virus” Challenge is designed to meet #virology halfway. We want virology to show us, using their own methods, that they can actually independently reproduce and replicate the exact same results while blinded to the different samples that they will be working with.
I will leave the exact details of the challenge to be explained by the document linked below, but we are offering a first step to finally settle this debate once and for all. Whether the virology community (and those who back them) will accept this challenge (which Dr. Cowan has already received financial backing for) remains to be seen. However, if the virologists are truly interested in #science and performing the proper control experiments that should have been carried out from the very beginning, there is absolutely no reason for them not to accept.
“If current trends continue, women & men will be equally represented in the field of biology in 2069. In physics, math & engineering, women should not expect to reach parity for more than a century.“
“The data show that women are systematically denied the chief currencies of scientific credit: publications & citations.”
In the 1960s, the sugar industry funded its own research on the effects of sugar on health.
The results didn't look good - for them. Studies revealed a high-sugar diet may increase risks associated with heart attacks, strokes & certain cancers.
But... rather than share emerging findings, the study was curiously halted & the industry successfully shifted blame onto fats.
Fission is in the news, but few recognize that a woman physicist was behind the discovery.
Lise Meitner’s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry w/o her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.
