And our results (along with our international colleagues) have dropped!
Our team (and others) have started to see the strongest evidence as yet of the stochastic gravitational wave background - ripples in space-time cause by ALL the supermassive black holes in the history of the Universe colliding!
We use pulsars to study these riplles and we needed almost 20 years of data to even get the first hints! It's the long game!
I'm a co-author on the Aussie papers (as part of my work) but I also wrote about it here in my latest feature article on #SpaceAustralia
This is why I have been going on about pulsars for a few weeks now - this was coming!
Happy #Pride, everyone! Want some Pride merch from someone who WON'T move it to the back of the store when fascists whine about seeing it?
I'm an Ace, gay artist with a series of cute, punny illustrations based upon scientifically accurate, amazing facts about how queer the animal kingdom is.
The "Queer Zoology Series" is available in my shop as prints, and for a limited time, as T-shirts. NOTE: t-shirt and print shops are two separate links.
I’ve heard people make that framing over the years, and I really don’t know where they come up with it.
The value of the scientific method is exactly that theories are maybe, leading to testing via hypothesis.
When I hear people saying theory is certain, they really get the whole point of #science backwards. If the theory was certain there would be nothing worth testing.
Just for completeness, the way I’d frame science is: A model describes what you see A theory guesses at how the model works An experiment stresses the theory, trying to break it A hypothesis is the stress point where the theory may break
#wroclaw#science#panic
It is a #memoir that has more to do with the intersection of #science and #faith than it does anything else. It explains the experiences of those on the schizophrenic spectrum according to Jungian theory. It also tells of how I ended up homeless because the daughter of an FBI informant slandered me.
She always said her mom was FBI; I never believed her. I learned the hard way by ratting on a hitman friend of hers.
I would appreciate it if people could help me get more federated on my new instance. Please boost this post if any of the following tags apply to you so I can follow!
Hi! I need recommendations for chemistry book. For someone that does not really know much, only basic stuff from organic chemistry. It could even be big, equivalently for Campbell Biology, but in chemistry, I wouldn't mind.
After witnessing a white doctor refuse to treat a sick, elderly Native American woman who later died, Susan La Flesche Picotte decided to become a physician to help her people. Born in 1865, she grew up on Nebraska’s Omaha reservation.
In 1889, Picotte became the first female Native American to earn a medical degree in the U.S. She raised funding & opened Wathill Hospital in 1913 - the first private hospital on a reservation. https://drsusancenter.org/dr-susan#HistoryRemix#history#science
Meat industry blocked the IPCC’s attempt to recommend a plant-based diet
“A leak of a draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on #ClimateChange (#IPCC) report..has been particularly enlightening when it comes to just how much how delegations negotiate, watered down & delete scientists’ findings.”
I am not a tech person. I had absolutely *no idea* about effect of #Twitter using algorithms on my feed. I figured it just sent me things based on my overall interests, learning from my follows, RTs, etc.
And...maybe that was true? I don't know. But now, 2.5 months into using #Mastodon, my feed here is enriching.
Properly jaw-dropping moment this evening: an e-mail from my US publisher saying that "since it's a science book", they'll publish Blue Machine WITH METRIC UNITS. So I don't have to convert everything to foot pounds per square elephant. In YEARS of writing for the US, this is the first time I have ever had a hint that there is a world outside feet and inches. Progress! #Books#Metric#Science
