From @LiveScience: Emerging evidence suggests that plate tectonics may have begun much earlier than previously thought — and may be a big reason that our planet harbors life. Some scientists are now arguing that plate tectonics emerged very soon after Earth's formation — perhaps predating life itself. Read more: https://flip.it/9nLsjW #Science#Earth#Geology#Life#Aliens
Here's a little something for those of you feeling existential dread today.
From @PopularScience: Without humans, what would happen to Earth? "People have considered versions of this apocalyptic thought experiment for centuries, if not millenia. ... Ideas of human extinction and societal dissolution are rampant in religious texts and myths of ancient cultures."
@popsci looks at creatures who defy biological time: "From tiny jellyfish to one-ton sharks, some animals subvert scientific expectations about aging and death."
Scientists show how sperm and egg come together like a key in a lock.
@AssociatedPress reports: "The team found that three proteins on the sperm join to form a sort of key that unlocks the egg, allowing the sperm to attach. Their findings, drawn from studies in zebrafish, mice, and human cells, show how this process has persisted over millions of years of evolution. Results were published Thursday in the journal Cell."
Will children born today live to 100? Don’t bet on it, researchers say. A new study says that while life expectancy numbers are still inching up worldwide, we’re approaching the upper limit of human longevity. “We’re squeezing less and less life out of these life-extending technologies. And the reason is, aging gets in the way,” says S. Jay Olshansky, a University of Illinois-Chicago researcher who was lead author of the study. Read more from @AssociatedPress.
Humans have long been fascinated with understanding how life began and evolved on Earth, and modern scientists have made significant advances in answering questions around the origins of life here. A recent study might just have unearthed another piece of the puzzle — the organism from which all living organisms have descended. NASA data suggests there’s liquid water deep beneath Mars’ surface.
From @popsci: "The study suggests that there’s liquid water deep, deep in the Martian crust—at least five miles down, and potentially as far as 15 miles."
The discovery of a possible sign of life in Venus’ clouds sparked controversy four years ago. Now, scientists say they have more proof.
CNN reports: "The data, the researchers say, contains even stronger proof that phosphine is present in the clouds of Venus, our closest planetary neighbor."
1. Don't code when you're tired. 2. Don't login as root on your Linux/Unix boxes when you're tired, guys. 3. See # 1 again. 4. With time you will forget these rules again.
Venus wasn’t always hot and uninhabitable. Scientists think the second planet from the sun could have had as much water as Earth billions of years ago, and may have even supported life if any of that water was in liquid form. But researchers have a new theory as to how our neighbor in the solar system lost nearly all of its water and why it may have happened far faster than initially thought. The Conversation has more on the study.
Ah, the sweet smell of a production Linux container image… generously seasoned with sshd and a whole host of unwanted services you definitely didn't need. If only my "if" statements were as reliable as my morning coffee. Lmao. #linux#devops#sysadmin#life
Is life capable of spreading from planet to planet? A pair of astronomers recently proposed a detection strategy based on the concept of panspermia, the idea that life can start on one planet and spread to others by hitching rides on meteorites. "New research suggests there’s less oxygen on the icy surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa than thought — and that could affect what if any life might be lurking in the moon’s underground ocean."
