You might not notice it but nature is pretty loud, animals make a lot of noise. When its silent, when the birds (or smoke detectors) stop chirping, its because they know a predator is around and they're hiding. The african never mastered his environment, he's still a link in the food chain, and silence will spook him like any other pray animal.
