@todayilearned this makes perfect sense. both Lewis and Tolkien wrote at length about how pandering to children by making things inoffensive was wrong and condescending. they likely saw the movies as an insult to the intelligence of children and a sloppy adaptation (which they are). it should be noted that the quality of the production was not lost on them; the movies were and still are well-done works of animation.
