The situation itself, that a white man who hailed himself a great ally was privately a bigoted racist, is not a surprise. That happens a lot. But it’s repugnant when someone thinks their publicly-exposed “private” comments exonerate them from their wrong doing.
“Unfortunately…comments which I never intended to share publicly have come to light.”
But you said them. That’s who you are. Publicly or privately.
