   For those interested in #search, I've rewritten much of the introductory article on my plans for a next-generation search engine: https://github.com/davidshq/next-search

   I've defined the #philosophical characteristics (#ethical commitments to create a better world) and foundational characteristic (that which delivers the superior results, #HumanAugmentation) of the #SearchEngine.

     @davidshq Sounds like great principles! I'd love to see more human-augmentation in search!

     I wonder, have you seen the https://github.com/dewitt/opensearch standard? I think that's got some great potential which hasn't been exercised!

     Anyways keeping a keen eye on this in case my project can help...

     @davidshq @teleclimber Yeah, I'm much more keen on federated search than p2p search.

     Going full p2p makes it extremely hard to incorporate human augmentation!

     @teleclimber But if #presearch open sources their code, I'd totally want to look at doing that down the road!

     I also think a federated approach could be quite interesting. Imagine each country having a search engine, each state, each county, etc. As well as vertical search engines for all sorts of topics and search results!

     @davidshq I totally agree that making it decentralized makes it much harder to accomplish, so not attempting that may prove a good move.

     search engine but they are currently closed source (I believe they intend to open source someday).

     I'm not opposed to decentralization or federation. I haven't included them in my fundamental tenets as I don't want to expand the scope of the project so large that it is never accomplished.

     1/ @teleclimber I agree that there is a large risk of a company abandoning it's idealistic principles over time or of being acquired and having it's principles trampled into the ground almost instantaneously. I also agree we need to minimize the risk of this occurring.

     I've attempted to minimize this risk through being thoroughly open - e.g., data, algorithms, code - so that individuals could fork the engine for fun or profit.

     I think #presearch is doing a good job of creating a distributed

     @davidshq To me, an important characteristic of a future search engine is that it can't be taken over by a billionaire or big tech. When I read the philosphical characteristics, it sounds to me like "Don't Be Evil". We all know how that ended.

     I'd like to see a new web search and discovery capability based on distributed databases, protocols, and/or federation, etc...

     It should be something that empowers individual devs to hack their own clients, algorithms, whatever so that it can evolve.
