Rasterman (rasterman@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Friday, 19-Apr-2024 10:14:41 JST Rasterman After being reminded about the Virtual Boy by a random anon (@ChristiJunior), I decided to investigate if it could not be played on 3DS.
Turns out it is possible. A mad lad completed an emulator (updated as recently as 6 hours ago!) that runs Virtual Boy games on 3DS and even runs them in 3D! You get to experience the 3D without the eye-bleed of it being in your face. Nintendo missed out on adding VB games to the Virtual Console.
It's strange: the sound and music sounds like NES-era, but it also has crude 3D polygons like the N64.
So far I tried a pinball game made by Nintendo. After a bit, I go into a mini game, the ball turns in to Samus' gunship and "Theme of Super Metroid" starts playing in 8-bits. I fucked up immediately because I could not believe what I was hearing and a Metroid enemy killed my Samus-ship-ball and the regular game resumed.
Then I loaded another random ROM and it's a Japanese first person horror/shooter game based in Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth. You walk around in a mansion as the fish people try to kill you and you must shoot them but have limited ammo and there's a counter ticking down. What the fuck is this console?! :akko_aaa:
I did it for Wario Land; but now I feel like I need to play all 31 ROMs. :0390:- xianc78 likes this.

Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Friday, 19-Apr-2024 10:14:40 JST Christi Junior @Rasterman From what I understand, the Virtual Boy's actual games weren't half bad, there were just so damn few of them, and the system itself made every game at least somewhat unpleasant to play. -
Rasterman (rasterman@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 01:38:04 JST Rasterman @ChristiJunior Interesting outlook. If the Virtual Boy costed nothing and all games came out at once, it looks pretty neat.
Nintendo could've done the closest thing by selling its games on VC for, like $2 each. Or better yet, they could release a Switch compilation with everything on it. Maybe adding save states and other quality of life improvements (but no 3D). They might be able to get away with charging $20 for it. Maybe.
Don't wanna imagine how much the machine and its games costed back then. :monka_sweat: -
