Because a friend found this useful yesterday:
Before tackling a problem, figure out whether it's the sort of problem where when you've solved 80% of the problem, you've solved 80% of the problem, or the kind where solving 80% means you've solved 0% of the problem.
This is especially important in security and privacy because that last 5% might be impossible.

@leak I'd also add that when you're not sure whether the last 5% is impossible, tackle that part first ("Fail fast"). It can save you from doing the other 95% for naught.

If you need to solve 100% of a problem to get any benefit and the last 5% is impossible, *any* work on that problem is a waste of time. Figure that up front. Go work on something which actually can protect your users and systems and colleagues.

@leak In my projects it's easy to get roped into debating scope, over what exactly the problem it's meant to solve is.
Or there's the question of "what don't you know about the scope you've set?"...

If you don't know the problem you're trying to solve then how do you even know when you've solved this? I am an utter *pain* to folks in my orgs about this: the problem and measurements need to be nailed down at the beginning. The number of times I've seen folks trying to shift what they're doing without acknowledging that they were trying to dodge the hard part of the problem and no longer solving the actual problem we have is ... too many.
