The alleged persecution of Galileo was not because he was pushing Heliocentrism exactly. It was because when he was sponsored by the Pope to study and present both sides of the argument, he did so in paper that presented the Pope as a character named "Simplicito" and basically engaged in Lèse-majesté, which was punishable almost anywhere, on top of insulting the Supreme Pontiff.
At that, he was sentenced to lifetime house arrest and allowed visits, especially by his physician.
Galileo decided to be edgy while the Catholic Church was edgy from political instability. A bad time to do so.
