     @MoeBritannica I currently think machine translations do the best job for this exact reason: pure stoic literal translation. No guessing and handholding, editing and spoon-feeding, or unnecessary interpretating of the subtext, just the frkn literal text.

     @MoeBritannica I like when they translate it literally but I get to infer certain things because I understand the honorifics enough that they can just be implied in the translation I’m reading

     @MoeBritannica it's because of how widespread and popular anime is. they can't expect every dumb 14 year old girl(?) to actually enjoy the culture of the anime they are watching enough to care that onigiri is in fact NOT a jelly-filled donut. that's trickled down to even the most obscure anime now because they're still handled by the same translators that do the lolcalization for the popular ones.
