     @Paultron @offset plenty of guys have experience, they just don't have the specific experience with that system. which is true of anyone joining a new company they've never worked at before
     
     if the expectation is to hire a clone of the guy who was there for 20 years, that's just ridiculous. you hire a guy 5 years before you need him, have the 20 year guy train him, and treat him well enough that he doesn't leave

     @deprecated_ii @offset it's not knowing the language it's having experience to show you won't fuck up a piece of infrastructure, which inevitably comes down to being able to network and join the old boys club with a bunch of autismal old boomers who are the ancient equivalent of brony programmers
     
     Everyone says "yeah cobol guys can name their price" neglecting that these places aren't hiring a cobol programmer, they're hiring Glen who knows every facet of the system and pretty much lives only for this job and his vintage German scat porn webring

     maybe if the companies who need new college grads to learn COBOL shouldn't try to fuck them over with a contract that says "if you take our training and back out for any reason then you owe us $10k"

     @deprecated_ii @offset They do it to us, too. I knew a guy who signed on to a company that did year-to-year contracts, they had a rider in there that you “owed” them $30k if you quit during the period because they provided “training”.

     They copied it from the fractional operators who have to hire kids and pay $30,k for them to get rated in boutique light jets, but decided they could just apply it across the board even when they provided no training. It was shaping up to be a legal fight, they’d gotten the ball rolling with the lawyer when he went over their heads and told the company owner “hey your people are retarded they wanna sue me and I quit out of contract by 2 months”
