AT THE MOMENT OF DEATH: A REFLECTION ON ECCLESIASTES 12:6
A cord of silver cuts too quick
for man to see to ends divided part.
Like wizard's sleight of hand or doctor's trick
a last exhale will still a beating heart
in instant's time. No seconds counted down
are long enough to grudge the one to die
nor is each moment short of memories grown
to rosebeds full of white felicity
for fending off the odors of our fears.
Our golden lamps will shatter soon enough
when there remains no more a time for tears,
when words are treasured more than treasured stuff
when judgement's seat shall hear each final case
and, won or lost, we'll finish each our race.
