@whiteline @georgia @pernia @shrimp did it for years it's not that hard in most cases and in the other cases someone already wrote the script for you.

@sun @pernia @georgia @whiteline @shrimp systemd is basically just the Linux equivalent of the Mach bootstrap server + launchd, it serves to solve a problem for the time being but in time will probably get replaced by something even more heterodox and controversial (my sights are set on eBPF for this)

@shrimp @pernia @georgia @whiteline 99% of the time it's identical, 99% of the remaining 1% you can do with xinetd, the final sliver is doable with other alternative init systems that didn't swallow the entirety of linux. systemd is better but systemd exists so that redhat can own linux.

@sun @pernia @georgia @whiteline shell scripts are a bitch to maintain compared to unit files especially when it's a big project with multiple developers and at least one of them is jr level

@allison @pernia @georgia @sun @whiteline @shrimp I swear someone made a whole HTTP server in eBPF, but can't find it right.

@mint @pernia @georgia @sun @whiteline @shrimp this 100% doesn't surprise me
