somebody really needs to make a keyboard-layout-editor.com-to-PCB service.
like, even if you can't automate it! you should be able to upload a keyboard layout and pay 50$ or something and get back some PCB design files and a BOM

anything to shift power away from "mechanical keyboard bros" and towards "people who want to use keyboards"
@steven yeah that's what I'm thinking. like, build most of a generic design, then just have some coding or simple human intervention to do the rest.
@foone Legitimately, if there was a semi-standardized BOM for the microcontroller parts, it would be pretty trivial for amateurs to do the rest.
In a "post your layout to Reddit and a weirdo will probably do it for you" sort of way.
@foone this was my take on a keyboard prototyping rig - I made wee boards with a diode, a hotswap socket, and two IDC terminals on each. Print the shell, snap the keys in the front, stick the boards on the back, then punch down row and column wires to the boards. Cheaper/faster to iterate than PCBs, and open to 3d designs, but I didn't have the official punchdown tool and it'd throw a wire every now and then...
