For new users, it might be helpful to compare the Mastodon Network :mastodon: with Discord since both platforms are pretty similar!

Discord has servers, and so does the Mastodon Network, except here they're called instances.

And they are actual servers, not Discord's definition of servers.

And you can access them with any client you like without risking a ban.

And microblogging is slightly different from chatting.
