This was not better than simply expelling or killing all the jews, as evidenced by the jews later helping Iberia get conquered by Arabs. Theoretically I am not against assimilation, but the assimilation christians tried to do of the jews simply didn't work. Romans tried to assimilate them but because they were actively imposing Roman culture on the jews that got the jews to chimp out, and the Romans got to righteously slaughter and expel them in turn.
