"Start by seeing what your car is equipped to collect using Privacy4Cars’ Vehicle Privacy Report. Once you enter your car’s VIN, the site provides a rough idea of what sorts of data your car collects."
What the actual fsck are you recommending here? Sharing a VIN with some random website is a privacy issue. What's wrong with make, model, and year? I certainly don't want to provide specific PII for a "rough idea."
@eff Actually, all cars collect all data they can including everythinc on your phone if you use your car's app, and of course pass everything on to the manufactuers (in a more or less anonymised form) who will of course monetarize the data every which way they can. All manufacturers, period.
@eff What I'm curious about is how this information is communicated. Is it via 4G/LTE data network? And what is the consequence if it can't connect to that network? Like, if I go out of coverage, what stops working? It would be terrible if the antenna became disconnected (if it is external), damaged, or accidentally shielded. As long as I only lost crap I never wanted in the first place, though, I suspect I would decline to repair such damage.
