Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:03:25 JST Moon the joke plagiarism thing seems primarily to be that certain comedians who got really big turned out to be doing a lot of joke stealing, not so much that it's a thing that is happening all over or is destroying the industry. it is not uncommon for two independent jokes to be similar, especially if they are about current events, and it's not even terribly uncommon to hear a joke and then accidentally repeat it like an original observation years later. the issue was you would have a guy sitting on a pile of money and he ripped off like 20 of your best jokes and you are living out of a car. you feel like shit about it and when other people find out they naturally feel a sense of outrage about the injustice of it.
i am not certain about this but i think the backlash died when amy schumer got accused of it. this is my perception of the events but i could have it really wrong. but i saw video of what she supposedly said and it seemed like an open and shut case. but there was a huge defense of her, got framed as misogyny etc. i have heard people i respect say that the video wasn't fair and it was a case where two people came up with a very similar joke independently. again i watched the video and that seems highly unlikely to me but people that i acknowledge as experts that don't seem to be politically deranged have told me it's not a pattern of joke stealing. sometimes i do defer to experts.-
Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) (why@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:03:23 JST Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) @Moon @augustus my take is its all a copyright mindset where you can own ideas. not the crowd's fault for not understanding homage or references LS likes this. -
Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) (why@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:03:24 JST Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) @augustus @Moon also on music, covers exist all the time, especially for small acts live. performers and writers are different roles, why is comedy an exception where you must be both? -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:03:24 JST Moon @why @augustus they are just coded with different expectations as an accident of history. if i listen to a musician i don't assume everything she plays was composed by her but i absolutely assume a comedian's material is original and i probably wouldn't enjoy a comedian if i was told explicitly they were using someone else's jokes. material example: jay leno's standup is funny but his tonight show monologues where he's doing other people's jokes aren't fun to me. also because his writers suck and he's actually funny but still. -

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:05:33 JST Moon @why @augustus again a lot of what an ordinary person might call a joke theft like "oh i heard that from someone else first" isn't even a concern to them, its people with a pattern of taking a lot of material from multiple people and then profiting from it. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:05:33 JST Moon @augustus @why they are an interesting entertainment subculture that is actually at odds with the larger entertainment subculture because there is standup and then there is the standup special and movie deals. comedians have talked about this before. comedians are against joke stealing because its everyone's bread and butter and they are afraid of it happening to them and the community is small enough to mostly enforce this, it's actually kind of supportive. but the bigger entertainment community, there are a limited number of top tier jobs and far far more people vying for them than can fill them and so everybody is tearing down everybody else. sometimes comedians say there are people that are interested in comedy and people that are using comedy as a springboard to a movie career and their attitudes are very different, the latter will happily fuck you to get ahead. i don't know how true this characterization is but it's a thing i've heard more than once. Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) (why@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:05:34 JST Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) @Moon @augustus its being run under a model? its just social anarchy -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:05:34 JST Moon @why @augustus the community of standup comedians doesn't have formal rules but it has strong norms of behavior and people that are called joke thieves by them are defectors from that norm. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:05:35 JST Moon @why @augustus if you think it should all be run under a different model that's fine but it's just not homage. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:29:47 JST Moon @dave for the record, what the meme was:
I was digging through my external hard drives and posting old memes on here as I frequently enjoy doing, because it's fun to see old memes again sometimes.
I found an old pie chart that was something like "what will happen if gays are allowed to marry" and it was a bunch of things like a plague will happen or there will be natural disaster or world war 3 will start, and one big slice that just said "gays will get married". I noticed that most of the terrible predictions either have actually happened since then or were arguably in progress like world war 3, so i marked up the chart with all the items with "happened" or "in progress". you could argue it was in service of a regressive goal or whatever but it was funny so i did it, mea culpa. anyway, less than a week later i saw a different version of it show up on here and those other places so maybe it came from somewhere else first and i'm not actually the originator but i feel confident i was.LS likes this. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:29:48 JST Moon @dave with memes i think its just theft sometimes, somebody sees the meme and they don't like exactly how it is so they just remake it. i'm not bitter but i made an observation i made into a meme, i was absolutely the progenitor of the observation, and within a week someone else had made a different version of the exact same observation and it showed up on here posted by different people and then on reddit and 4chan. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 13-Feb-2023 00:29:48 JST Moon @dave in this case they literally just recreated the meme but with a different font and very slightly different wording, the only thing i can think is whoever did that wanted to share it as their original idea but if they just posted my image it would have shown up with an earlier source in reverse image search. -

Just yesterday I posted the shitpost on the left, and within minutes I had 3 people make the same joke which is summarized by the image on the right
