I was surprised that the MNT Reform laptop as reviewed by @geerlingguy only achieved 2.5 hours of battery runtime. So I tried replicating the same benchmark on my own MNT Reform with Banana Pi BPI-CM4 and fresh 2000mAh LiFePO4 cells by playing the exact same Youtube fireplace video in Firefox in fullscreen mode at full display brightness and got a much more respectable runtime of 4:45 hours. 🤔 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DA0Jr4WH-4 https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2024/mnt-reform-hackable-laptop-not-everyone

  @mntmn @mattontech @josch 4+ hours is actually quite good considering the hardware—if they were designing their own silicon (like Apple) or used mobile-specific chips (like most laptop manufacturers), that'd be middle of the road.
  For the performance it's 'not great, not terrible' but if you compare it to a modern MacBook or Dell/HP/whatever, it's going to lose there (but that's not what it's meant to compete with, at least IMO).

  @geerlingguy @mntmn @josch i don't think 2.5 to even 5 hours is "middle of the road" for a modern laptop that's also not offering a lot of performance. it's just bad. it's something that obviously would need to change for any hope to reach a wider audience

    i was upset today because a tech journalist on fedi called MNT Reform's battery runtime "awful" (only almost 5 hours of playing a video fullscreen on youtube). not only because of the mean choice of words but because the runtime is the consequence of a conscious choice: LiFePO4 cells over LiIon. with LiIon we could almost double the runtime, but they are more dangerous (thermal runaway), worse for the environment (cobalt) and don't last as long (less charging cycles).
