the technopoly bit that states optimization, aka updates, has to happen for the sake of "progress" regardless of purpose is something I've been noticing for a very long time now
I hate when companies needlessly update and redesign software just for the sake of it.
it's why I hate updates, and in fact, rarely update my stuff. shit just works as is. updating usually results in features getting removed or the thing breaking. it's why I despise updatefags by extension who insist that you have to ALWAYS keep your software up-to-date because of "security"
@Spooke I could see some sense in your argument if those security updates didn't always come bundled with issues, annoying bloat, and/or pointless redesigns.
Windows 10 is the same as windows 7 except for the useless bloat and spyware that got bundled in the package.
Hell, I stopped updating my Husky once I found a stable release because each update kept breaking shit. The maintainers have been doing nothing but fixing then reintroducing bugs in an endless cycle.
And don't get me started on social media sites like YouTube or discord continuously redesigning their UI and making it worse and worse for the sake of "modernization" and "progress"
@Meemoo i think it really just depends on the software. If its something that will be connected to the internet it's probably going to be a good idea to keep it updated lest you become part of some botnet.
:clownpiece_glowie: when you think of all those IoT cameras and whatnot that are connected to the internet still running firmware from 2005 being used to ddos websites/services.
Otherwise I think it's fine to not update software if it works it works provided it's not connecting to the internets.
@Kyonko802 I get extremely fucking FURIOUS when UIs get redesigned and all complaints get waved off with "you'll get used to it :)" or "you just hate change" when all it did was fucking REDUCE info and control you have over something when previous iterations worked just fine
I want to fucking boil technopologists alive :angery:
@Tamamo@Kyonko802 I will never not be mad over sites displaying less or outright removing features post-UI redesign
Remember when twitter used to offer archives of your account? It got removed after the web redesign and never re-added again until last year, a whole half a decade later. Also remember when there was a tab that displayed following activities like follows and favorites etc.? Removed for a decade, only living through the untouched tweetdeck until they decided to redesign it.
@Kyonko802 iirc win11 got rid of the fucking old control panel so you can't do anything resembling basic control over your own device on that PoS
Every time I have to fix a laptop that has the shit installed the whole ordeal becomes an investigation to find where the pajeets put the setting instead (if it even still exists at all)
@Spooke the whole windows 7 situation just proved that you can't airgap old computers anymore.
Steam will just not let you launch your games until you upgrade to a new goy-proved OS And Google is on a mission to eliminate any and all old OS from accessing the internet through their monopoly on browsers forcing web developers to abandon old standards which won't let you download old builds of software if you need to.
@Meemoo I'm at the point where if I care about old software I have an airgapped computer that has all the software I want to run it on while being kept offline and if I want to add additional software it'll be by usb..
The alternative is I'll eventually have to learn how to use proxmox so I can emulate the environment required to run the disc image of the above computer so that I can keep running ye olden software in perpetuity.
@Meemoo@Kyonko802 The old control panel still exists but you have to dig deep in the start menu to find it. It's currently in Windows Tools, which opens up as a separate folder. It's annoying to get to whenever I have to change something. But it's not the same Control Panel as it was decades ago. Some of the controls has since moved onto Windows 11 Settings.
@Meemoo@Spooke very fucking annoying i often need an older version of a browser that'll play nice with older TLS protocols and cipher suites to connect to the management interfaces on older network equipment.........to update the fucking firmware
@Kyonko802@Meemoo@Spooke I never understood why so much shit like signs and ATM's, POS, etc pointlessy runs on full blown windows instead of something like Nucleus. I used to have a feature phone that ran on Nucleus. That thing was rock solid. Never crashed on me once in the 5+ years that i used it.
