    I just buy a cellphone refurb and I take the smallest plan possible in Canada, I pay like 12$ :shrugz: I ain't gonna get a 1000$ cellphone and be stuck on a 100$ plan, that's stupid

Devices are way marked up and it used to be standard that you'd essentially lease-to-own your devices on a THREE YEAR contract until the government actually had to step in and make a law limiting mobile contracts to two years

      As in it was actually valued reasonably high but they had a deal where they'd give you $100 on the spot to sign a 2-year contract, and it so happened that I needed $100 at the time, so after pricing out the whole two years I decided it was worth it.
      I snapped the sim the day the contract ended because fuck continuing to pay $70/mo for some trash plan lol, the plan was barely worth $20/mo.

      @coolboymew this phone I'm using cost $200 and I've had it for 5 years. Still going pretty strong, though I can tell some apps are getting bloated and not running too well on it anymore. They probably target iPhone and Samsung and don't give a shit about anything else.

      Your phone won't connect to service without it, and without service, no hotspot
      I've used hotspot spoofing before, but a lot of the apps I used needed a client on the connecting devices, one that didn't work on Linux

      @coolboymew I basically stopped buying new phones once I cracked my Pixel 5’s screen and realised it would cost more to get it fixed then to buy another refurb. I just found one on Amazon that had really good support Lineage for like 1/5th of the cost of the repair.

      I know it’s risky because no official security updates but if I got any of the new phones that are reasonably priced I’d be stuck on the stock ROM and would have my nudes sent to the alphabet boys anyways so honestly I’m willing to take the risk. :lain-sad:

      @coolboymew Even then, you can still get really cheap refurbs that are still in the update window. Only real issue aside from less support is that the batteries are always worse. I hope removable batteries come back because of the whole EU legislation but I’m not holding my breath.
