   If you're an older millennial or gen X without kids, you're out of touch with how big of a difference there is between the way we grew up and what's been going on for kids today. All the tropes that we learned were repackaged versions of classics— Aesop's fables, Brother's Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, The Greek and Roman myths, etc. Everything today is inversion and there's no cultural inertia carrying forward stories of heroes journeys or good, beautiful, and true. It is girlboss and endlessly iterative cartoons made to sell toys. A proper close can never happen, because that implies a beginning and end and limits marketing and refresh ability. Nothing can be permanent in a year zero society. This is where we are today in almost all Western media.
   
   And then you get to anime. The girls are cute, the heroes are heroic, the quests are cool, and there's that feeling of familiarity repackaged in a different medium. There's no desire to make every character "queer" or otherwise flawed in some 21st century collapsed culture sort of way. They draw heavily from Eastern and Western classics, and they're not afraid to present traditionalism in a positive light. Joseph Campbell would appreciate their heroes journey, unlike what The West typically produces today. It's not all good quality, but there's so much of it produced that it's like a giant extremely rich mine. You still have the neverending stories of Shonen Jump, but they are generally enjoyable even if they give off a similar vibe to the Saturday morning cartoons of my childhood.

     @BowsacNoodle @Stagg_3751 It's the sort of "I'm going to portray a 1950s family but they're actually all gay and addicted to drugs" attitude that shitlib writers think is so original. Everyone is trying to add as much grimdarkness, fuckery, and violence to everything that it becomes meaningless. Which is oddly meta.

     @H_A_Copington @Stagg_3751 I forgot about nihilism. EVERYTHING Western is drenched in nihilism. Rejection of the idea of meaning and virtue allows 'ironic' depictions of wickedness to be presented as hip and cool instead of fake and gay.

     @BowsacNoodle @Stagg_3751 Gore is a cheap way to make your work seem transgressive, edgy, or adult. Adding in sexuality and making everything feel icky and perverse appeals to people who only understand adulthood as "Ah now I can indulge in vices."
     
     There is a reason I refuse to watch The Boys and it's not because I'm particularly squeamish, I just find that level of subversion and nihilism to be off-putting. I felt the same way about the Final Destination and Saw films. Although I do admit to watching the Making Of of the former because I think practical effects are cool.

     I don't assume that everyone who likes horror and gore is screwed up, and you shouldn't assume all casual escapism is weakness. sometimes it's nice to have background noise not full of the grotesque.

     I was thinking more like how it's okay to like girly looking cartoons but somehow liking gore films or horror is bad because "it makes me feel icky". Absolutely mental.

     @BowsacNoodle I'm an younger millennial (27), I just have a stronger preference for gore flicks or old Sci-Fi more than anything else when I decide to watch something. At worst I see the moe shit/SoL preference as a consequence of leftist propaganda, but that's about it.

     @Stagg_3751 SoL is a consequence of leftist propaganda; it is appealing to view even manufactured or shallow normalcy in a world so screwed up. Older sci-fi asked questions we now pretend don't need to be asked, particularly on ethics, and anime often delves heavily into that territory. Don't write off the medium because you don't see the best of it.
