Staying behind means more and more potential support issues as software falls behind and such.
Honestly, from what I could tell, Wayland does legitimately seem better. I think it is really overall a positive change. I'm sure it has its own fair share of issues though. Regardless, this is what the community has decided.

We've been "nurturing" 40 years old tech with x11, pushing it for something it was not designed to do. Now that maintainers are staring to move exclusively to the new stuff, we should see expedited improvements.
