Carmakers must bring back buttons to get good safety scores in Europe
In 2026, Euro NCAP points will be deducted if some controls aren't physical.

@arstechnica Seat belts were open to public for driver's safety back half a century ago. Now people are adding "features" that clearly harm driver's safety just for marketing benefits. Wtf.
@arstechnica Yay! Touchscreens die, please.
@arstechnica that's good. Hopefully this will become a worldwide thing!
@arstechnica I was looking to replace my car in 2022 with a plug-in hybrid one.
After trying out several of them, I ended up with none. That’s because all of them features touch capacitive controls. I definitely avoid them.
@arstechnica Excellent. Thanks to the European Union for reversing this awful trend. Controlling a car is not like controlling your smartphone. There is no need for the compromise of having no buttons other than cost cutting on the part of the manufacturer.
@arstechnica I want to move to Europe...😁
@arstechnica I’m all for physical controls, but I’m always amazed when people use AC-controls as an example that should be physical. Why? I don’t know about you, but I rarely touch those. You set the temperature once, and then you let automation handle it. Only thing I do is to occasionally turn on defrosters at the start of the drive.
@arstechnica Finally!
Sometimes mechanical standardized buttons and behavior simply are better. Especially for basic safety related functions like steering, braking, direction indication and alarms.
@arstechnica yessass!
@arstechnica I've not driven the new model yet (I have a 2023 3)but lack of indicators on stalk does seem to cross the line for me. w/s wipers borerline, but that is much improved now. Not a fan of the gear change idea either.... but the rest are fine.
@arstechnica I applaud EuroNCAP for this.
I hope #safety rating bodies in other parts of the world follow suit.
I also hope points will be deducted for cars without rear wipers. Those cars’ rear view mirrors become unusable if dust, mud, or rain accumulates on the rear windscreen while driving. Especially if the glass has shallow slope causing faster buildup. Among others, recent Nissan Versa, Toyota Corolla, & Tesla models in some markets have this safety flaw.

Finally, the #GUI in vehicles loses ground! The physical, mechanical switch fights back. #ergonomics
