   @ajroach42 People use this same kind of fatalism/binary fallacy when it comes to privacy & security as well: "I can't completely secure myself so why bother." It's motivated reasoning. They don't want to have to care, so they grasp for a reason not to. The actual excuse they pick is not that relevant, and convincing them their reason is bullshit won't change their mind. They'll just come up with a different excuse.

   So I'd just ignore the excuse entirely and point out that they're doing something that directly benefits not just a transphobe but a high-profile transphobe who has done significant harm to trans people.

     I just saw someone I generally like pull "no ethical consumption under capitalism" as an excuse to justify buying Hogwarts Legacy.

     I'm trying really hard not to engage in that conversation, but I needed to vent somewhere, so I guess it's going to be here.

     Capitalism is built on exploitation, and any consumption under capitalism will come with some exploitation.

     But, as is always the case, this is not a zero sum game. This is not all or nothing. Your choices aren't Maximal Harm or Don't Eat.

     I don't shop at Hobby Lobby because Hobby Lobby is evil. I don't shop at chicfila because chicfila actively funds violence against the LGBTQ community.

     I do shop with people I know, because that money circulates within our communities, making us all stronger.

     This is easy for me to understand, but other people seem to find it a challenge.
