I don't care about cameras on phones. I want my phone to have
1. a removable and replaceable battery
2. a sdxc slot
3. a headphone jack -

A lot of these "megapixel wars" between manufacturers is marketing, nothing more.oh, our device has THIS MANY xyz!Sensor size, arguably, plays a much bigger role in photography vs. megapixels. I would be a lot more excited to see a dramatic increase in phone sensor sizes vs. megapixel count. Would be interesting to see a small crop sensor standard like MFT show up on a smartphone.

Standalone cameras also have sensors and optics worth a damn. The "200MP" phone cameras have raw images that are grainy and noisy as fuck, that then get downsampled to about 20MP essentially using the raw pixels as subpixels in the final image. It's marketing nonsense.
And that's not even going into the phone camera lenses which are just polycarbonate messes smudged by fingers and pocket lint.Heavens Feel likes this. -

I'm not a technical person, but I was told the lenses matter much more than MPLS likes this. -
mutebird (mutebird@collapsitarian.io)'s status on Wednesday, 08-Feb-2023 07:14:28 JST mutebird @kaia Do the amount of megapixels matter much? Back in the day I always heard that it doesnt matter much because the actual camera sensor was so small. -
LS (lain@lain.com)'s status on Wednesday, 08-Feb-2023 08:10:11 JST LS @kaia @mutebird This is true, but that's also why phones have insanely high MP: It's hard to put 'real' lenses on a phone. My proper camera has 24MP, but i can put a 400mm zoom lens on it and take a picture of things half a mile away. With a phone, that's only possible if you can digitally zoom in far enough, which is only possible with high MP counts.
So overall I'd say it's not all marketing, but it also doesn't make your pictures magically better. -
