Wonder what Nintendo will cook up for their next console
-
@Curvin @ChristiJunior @merchantHelios I don't see how you build a console with those capabilities for less than $500. I'd guess ~$700 for it to be built right.
-
@Squadalah_Man @ChristiJunior @merchantHelios Think about the concept as a mega-system that can play anything you want on-demand, old and new, intended for mostly retro-gamers, just put in the game and go at it, as for accessibility issues, I have a solution: just sell it to them piece by piece, in a alternative version in wich each part of the megasystem can work on it's own, but can be combined with the other pieces to slowly assemble the whole structure together.
It's guaranteed to cost a pretty penny in the long run, but you can say goodbye to scalpers trying to sell you old-fashioned hardware for much more than it used to be worth.
-
@Curvin @ChristiJunior @merchantHelios If they had something that did all that and it worked seamlessly well I'd be willing to pay.
Wouldn't sell well to normies though.
-
@Squadalah_Man @ChristiJunior @merchantHelios >Wouldn't sell well to normalfags
How so?

@ChristiJunior @merchantHelios I know what would make Nintendo an immense amount of money.

-
@merchantHelios They're gonna make a new system?
-
@Curvin @merchantHelios They really don't need anything more than another hybrid console that's backwards compatible, boasts PS4-level power, and has a big launch game.
-
@Curvin @ChristiJunior @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios At that point you might as well buy a steamdeck with a dock and an external BD-drive.
-
@Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios As for WHY the GameCube failed: Launching with Luigi's Mansion instead of a mainline Mario, its big Mario game being the franchise's black sheep and boasting a gimmick that didn't excite any casuals, GameCube Zelda being cartoony and actively pissing off the fans, Mario Kart Double Dash not being that big of an upgrade on Mario Kart 64 etc.
The GameCube generally handled Nintendo's B-Tier franchises much better than the A- and S-Tier ones, which meant that lots of hardcore fans loved it, but that its mainstream appeal and success was very limited.
-
@ChristiJunior @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios Wdym the GameCube "failed"? How?
There has to have been something I wasn't aware of.
-
@Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios The GameCube only sold 21 million (I remember Nintendo expecting at least 50 million), and was outsold by even the Xbox. Worst-selling Nintendo home console until the Wii U (NES: 60 million, SNES: 49 million, N64: 33 million). Also, its big games generally sold way less than their N64 counterparts. It was commercially unsuccessful by pretty much any metric, though I'm not sure it actually lost money.
-
@Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios I can pretty much guarantee that Nintendo won't go that route - they prefer cheap, simple and underpowered hardware that's still capable enough to pull off the kind of games they want to make. The failure of the GameCube made them give up on the Power approach, and the Wii U flopping might have finally soured them on gimmicks.
-
@Squadalah_Man @ChristiJunior @merchantHelios It is an excessively grand, unorthodox idea, and likely far too expensive to be made fornthe larger public, I might need to think the concept trough.
-
@ChristiJunior @Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios Gamecube lost to PS2 because parents could use the latter as a DVD-player when they bought one for their children.
-
@Soma @Squadalah_Man @Curvin @admin @merchantHelios It's kinda whack how the PS2's poor build quality was probably what secured it the title of best-selling console ever, seeing how close the DS came to dethroning it. The Switch now has a good shot at claiming the crown tho.
-
@Squadalah_Man @ChristiJunior @admin @Curvin @merchantHelios I went through 3 PS2s because of disk read errors that thing had a death wish the moment you turned it on.
-
@admin @ChristiJunior @Curvin @merchantHelios That was a weird design choice, don't know why they insisted on the weird mini disks.
I do know from experience Gamecubes were built like tanks. Friends little brother dragged one down a flight of stairs by the controller and it was perfectly fine. Breathe on a mk.1 ps2 wrong and it had disk read error.
-
@ChristiJunior @Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios Didn’t the GameCube also have those weird mini discs as opposed to regular CDs that the PlayStations and Xboxes used? I recall that being another complaint about the GameCube back in its day.
-
@ChristiJunior @Soma @Curvin @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios
DS Lite hinges were fragile af themselves.
-
@ArdainianRight @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios Never owned that one, I own the original DS and the Big Boy DS, both feel really chunky and solid.
-
@ChristiJunior @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios
I think DS Lite was the bestselling model. Those things did not hold up well, though. It's a far cry from the absolute tank that was the N64.
-
@ArdainianRight @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios I think the Wii/DS generation marked the turning point where Nintendo started really cutting corners in terms of build quality - and yet I believe the Wii *still* boasted a way lower failure rate than either the PS3 or (LOL) the 360.
My launch Switch is also still going strong, though the Joy Cons obviously leave a lot to be desired in terms of durability.
-
@ChristiJunior @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios
Joycons and the kickstand are the main points of failure.
-
@ChristiJunior @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios
N64 really was peak durability. The controller sticks might give out, but mine still works decades later even after all kinds of crap, including my siblings testing to see how many pennies they could fit into it.
-
@ArdainianRight
I barely use either. Bluetooth controller and dock, with occasional portable use. So that’s not an issue in either case
@ChristiJunior @Soma @admin @Curvin @Squadalah_Man @merchantHelios
-
@ArdainianRight @Curvin @Soma @Squadalah_Man @admin @merchantHelios Still the coolest-looking home console too, always loved how sleek and futuristic the N64 looked, and those fucking spaceship controllers.
Killer logo too. :n64:
